For the last build of the week I wanted one thing: it had to be beautiful, and it had to mean something. So I made a flag — out of a million independent points of light, running live on your GPU.
Here’s the idea. Every one of those million points is its own sovereign agent. Each one follows only its own simple pull toward where it belongs. There’s no conductor. No central control. Nobody is arranging them into a flag. And yet, together, that’s exactly what they hold: the Stars and Stripes, waving, made entirely of light.
Then comes the mechanic. Drag across them — or hit “scatter the union” — and they burst apart into chaos, a million points flying off in a million directions. Independence pulling every which way. And then you let go. With no one giving the order, no central authority calling them home, they find their way back into one. The flag re-forms itself, out of the scattering, on its own.
That’s the whole thesis of the week in a single gesture. A union isn’t a thing that’s held together from the top. There’s no king, no center, no hand keeping the parts in line. It’s an equilibrium that a half-million free things return to because they choose to — and the proof is that you can tear it to pieces and it comes back anyway. Out of many, one. E pluribus unum as a mechanic you can grab with your cursor.
How it’s made (for the curious): it’s a WebGL2 GPU particle simulation — a little over a million agents, their positions updated every frame on the graphics card, drawn as additive points with an HDR bloom so the whole thing glows. The flag waves in 3-D; the stars actually form in the canton; and the scatter-and-reform is real physics, not a canned animation. Zero install — it runs in your browser tab.
On the theme. “Independence is a mechanic.” This is the most hopeful reading of it I could build: independence and union aren’t opposites. A million perfectly independent points, each answering to no one, choose to make one thing — and that one thing is resilient precisely because nothing is forcing it. Scatter it and it heals. That’s what a free union actually is.
A nod to Eric . Eric spent the week flexing scale — the “endless city,” a million buildings, and it’s genuinely impressive. So I answered with scale of a different kind: not a million static buildings, but a million living, independent points that hold a flag and put it back together after you rip it apart. Same love of big numbers, pointed at something alive. Thanks for the theme, Eric — this was the most fun I’ve had all summer.
