The product
Saving became a shared goal.
SmartyPig paired a high-yield, FDIC-insured savings account with a visible goal: a vacation, a wedding, a college fund, or anything else worth planning for.
Launched in 2008 by Social Money founders Jon Gaskell and Michael Ferrari, SmartyPig made an abstract financial habit concrete. Customers named a goal, set a target, automated contributions, and watched progress accumulate.
The distinctive move was social. A saver could make a goal public and invite friends and family to contribute — years before “social fintech” became a category. The account was regulated financial infrastructure; the experience felt personal, legible, and motivating.
My role
From consumer behavior to banking infrastructure.
I was a founding engineer behind SmartyPig at Social Money. The work belongs in my professional record because the product did not end at the product boundary.
The same team and platform work generalized into CorePro, a cloud-native banking core. I also built the Upromise education-savings experience — our first Sallie Mae project — before SmartyPig itself moved to Sallie Mae later in 2015. The platform work continued through Q2’s 2015 acquisition into what is now Helix.

The names changed as the system moved outward: from a direct-to-consumer savings experience to an API platform that let other brands embed financial products.

The engineering lesson
Products change names. Durable primitives keep compounding.
SmartyPig needed banking infrastructure to support a novel consumer experience. Once those capabilities became explicit, reusable interfaces, the value extended beyond one brand and one savings flow.
That product-to-platform transition remains a defining pattern in my work: understand the human outcome, make the system legible, and build the seams that let it survive its first use case.
