Independence Town turns weekly progress into a parade and fireworks show.

What It Is

Independence Town is a cozy WebGL town builder where tiny citizens need useful places to work, build, gather, and celebrate. The player grows a small town, assigns practical jobs, responds to weekly goals, and earns Sparks for the Friday fireworks show.

The game runs as a static browser project. No server is required for the game loop, so the core experiment stays close to the GameLab pattern: ship a playable artifact, then let the page explain what the artifact is trying to prove.

Why It Matters

The design is another Independence Engines pass, but softer and more playful than the repair and job-search labs. It asks whether practical agency can feel warm instead of stern: help people find roles, build shared capacity, and make visible progress before the week ends.

The fireworks loop gives the system a readable pulse. Build decisions are not abstract upgrades. They turn into citizens with jobs, town energy, show quality, and a public celebration the player can immediately understand.

How It Plays

  • Start from the title screen, choose a map, and grow a small town from the initial unlocked buildings.
  • Place buildings, inspect citizens, and look for jobless helpers who need a useful role.
  • Complete weekly goals to unlock more town options and build momentum.
  • Trigger the Friday show once the town has enough Sparks and watch the parade pay off the week's work.

Design Notes

The prototype combines a voxel-style town, classic script loading, local saves, title-screen progression, mobile controls, and a parade system. The useful design question is whether a management loop can stay legible while still feeling like a toy.

The current build emphasizes feedback: Sparks, citizens, job needs, map unlocks, and show quality are all surfaced through visible town behavior rather than a pure spreadsheet interface.
